His explanation clearly indicates that Ferguson has punished Rooney for his misdemeanor by dropping him for one game. If this were true, then in-hindsight the decision does seem to been a costly one. 

The will to lose it all

The world rewards fascinating people by putting them on a pedestal. I wonder if it is really worth idolizing sports-persons/celebrities/politicians? With great powers come great responsibilities and they have an uncanny habit of letting us down most often than not. 

The reason for such letdowns is because everyone is a human being after all! Take for example Cristiano Ronaldo - He is known for his promiscuousness and so its ok for him to have a plethora of girlfriends and having kids with random women, but its not alright for Wayne Rooney to go on sordid sex romps because he has a family with his childhood sweetheart. These people are as much guilty as the media for creating the public image for these individuals. Every human is susceptible to vice, and only the ones with the strongest willpower overcome these temptations.

Pakistani cricketers have a similar plight. They have abundant talent, but some of them choose to throw it all away just for some petty money. It is understandable if sports-persons take performance enhancing drugs as the desire to win at all cost may drive them to do cheat, but accepting money to throw away games or catering to the whims of match-fixers is simply ridiculous!
